Grateful Dead party at Rancho Olompali June 1966

From The Lost Year

In September 2020 I saw an article that jogged my memory about an event I attended right in the middle of the lost year. I somehow heard about a party at Rancho Olompali in Novato and hitchhiked there alone. As you’ll see from the article, it was a “seminal event”.

I have precious little memory of the day. I was in this group sitting on the grass watching the bands. I remember various women and men drifting around in various stages of undress, including Neal Cassady and lots of beer for the hot day. I don’t remember seeing the inside of the house or the swimming pool. I wasn’t in the in-group that threw the party, and wasn’t invited for the sleepover. It felt like this is where  the big kids played. I was attracted to the energy, drifting around the periphery In a druggy haze with no drums, no band, no direction.
