For the first few years, John Daishin Buksbazen was my special friend at the Zen Center. Like most of the people there I received my first beginner’s instruction from him. We all knew that Daishin (as he was always known) was Maezumi Roshi’s editor, which meant he produced Roshi’s elegant written English. But my little ‘secret’ was that I spent many long afternoons and evenings in his apartment next door to the zendo sharing witty conversation and the finest high grade marijuana with him, his wife, and their roommate Jannie.
