Santana

From Interactions with other bands

This is a rare handbill from a gig Mount Rushmore played on November 10, 1967, maybe the only copy to survive.

There were only two bands playing upstairs on a Friday night in a warehouse at 55 Colton St. in San Francisco for a sparsely attended Peace and Freedom Party benefit. We knew nothing about the new young group sharing the bill, the Santana Blues Band. We were definitely more well known at the time than they were. The seller offering the handbill says it was “eight months before they would appear at either the Fillmore or Avalon, and eighteen months prior to their first album”.

They were monsters! That little loft above a warehouse could barely contain their energy. I can’t remember any details except an image of David Brown the bass player moving around with the big pulse and seeming to be the heart of the band. But it was obvious that these guys wouldn’t be playing these tiny gigs for long.
