My reply to Morten

In my ongoing correspondence with Morten Sorensen, now living near Oslo, this is what I sent him today.

You asked “at what point – as a natural progression of human life into maturity (rather than old age) do we give up on wanting to change the world and rather concentrate on our moving forward spiritually, that is; preparing ourselves for our transition.”

That stopped me. What I’m doing is action designed to change the world, without attachment to outcome, as part of moving forward spiritually, that is; preparing myself for my transition.

As I get older and closer to the end, my practice shifts more and more to letting go. In learning to let go it helps me to think about serving others, being grateful for support, releasing self-centered tightness and grasping.

In the book I’m using as a guideline for the stages of life in my website, Nature and the Human Soul, he calls my period of life Stage 7, Early Elderhood. Each stage has a Center of Gravity and a Task. For Early Elderhood he says they are:

Center of Gravity: The soul of the more-than-human community

Task: Caring for the soul of the more-than-human community

This worked perfectly with my project of letting go of self-clinging and also with my ongoing obsession with the question “What is the shift of consciousness necessary to reverse the global environmental crises?” It gave me permission to throw myself into the inquiry knowing that it also helps release grasping the small self, which in my view is a key to a peaceful transition.
